Who is a Candidate for Bariatric Surgery?

Not every morbidly obese person is a candidate for the Laparoscopic
Gastric Bypass surgery. The following criteria must be met:

bullet2.gif (944 bytes) Patients are usually be between 18 and 60 years of age

bullet2.gif (944 bytes) No history of major psychiatric illness

bullet2.gif (944 bytes) Weight of 100 lb. over normal for their height or BMI > 35, if medically indicated

bullet2.gif (944 bytes) Patient must have documented support of their immediate family

bullet2.gif (944 bytes) Patient must have personal physician who will support the patient for Gastric Bypass surgery and will actively follow them after their operation if out of the local area

bullet2.gif (944 bytes) No history of drug use or alcohol abuse

bullet2.gif (944 bytes) If patient is under the care of a psychiatrist, this psychiatrist must document stability of patient for surgery and have plan for management of depression post operatively

bullet2.gif (944 bytes) Patient must document commitment to participate in postoperative exercise and follow up program

bullet2.gif (944 bytes) You must have a complete understanding of this procedure, the risks and life long changes in eating habits.
